2025 Ice Bath Festivals In Japan and Scientific Guide

The Phenomenon Of The Ice Baths Culture In Japan

The ice bath culture in Japan originated from the traditional ceremony of “Cold Purification (かんちゅうみそぎ)”, which is one of the important Shinto practices to purify the body and mind for the New Year. In recent years, this tradition has been given a more modern meaning, combined with health management to form a variety of ice baths Japan experiences that have attracted a large number of domestic and foreign tourists.

Especially in Hokkaido, Nagano and Tokyo, ice baths activities have been combined with local ice and snow festivals, hot spring festivals, light shows and other cultural elements to create a unique new trend in ice baths and tourism.

How To Do Ice Bath(Steps Guidance)

Ice baths are challenging but safe and manageable if done scientifically. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Warm up: 5-10 minutes of light aerobic exercise or a hot shower, to enhance body temperature.
  2. Gradual entry into the water: You can do it slowly, from the feet gradually into the cold water, to avoid sudden immersion.
  3. Control time: Beginners are advised to control between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, up to a maximum of 5 minutes.
  4. Focus on breathing: Use slow, deep breathing to help your body adapt to the cold stimulus.
  5. Immediate warming up: Quickly put on dry warm clothes after finishing and drink warm drinks to restore body temperature.

Precautions Before and After An Ice Bath In Japan

Precautions Before an Ice Bath

  1. Health Assessment and Contraindications: SYOCHI does not recommend ice baths for people with conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, fever, or pregnancy.
  2. Ensure that someone accompanies you (especially ice bath beginners): Please make sure you have a professional or a friend with you when you try it for the first time to avoid the situation of unaided hypothermic shock.
  3. Cleanliness: Keep your body clean and avoid cosmetics, oils and grease that may affect the water quality, especially in public ice baths.
  4. Mindfulness and Breathing Control: Practice rhythmic breathing before entering the ice water to keep your breath stable.

Precautions After an Ice Bath

  1. Rapid warming(priority): Dry your body with a towel, immediately put on warm clothing (hat, down jacket, socks, gloves, etc.) and use warm items.
  2. Warm drinks for warming up: Drink warm water, ginger tea, hot milk and other warm drinks; avoid drinking hot water immediately.
  3. Avoid strenuous exercise immediately: Rest for 10-15 minutes before gentle stretching or slow walking.
  4. Observe body reactions: Observe any abnormal body reactions and consult your doctor immediately.
  5. Hydrate & replenish electrolytes: Drink functional beverages with electrolytes (e.g., coconut water, sports drinks) to aid recovery.
Ice baths in Japan is not only a test of physical limits, but also a spiritual cleansing. Whether it’s immersing yourself in nature outdoors or experiencing precise temperature-controlled cold therapy through an ice bath chiller, this ancient practice is regaining attention with new technology and vigor.
